Not on the list, but I'd say Mobile, Alabama. Its on the coast, its in a good location on I-10. Just west of Pensacola, a few hours east of New Orleans, not too far from Houston. And then if you go north, its not too far from Memphis, Montgomery, Birmingham, Atlanta, Nashville, etc. There's coastal industry there, close to great underrated beaches (which will hopefully stay underrated) and a lot of potential in general.

But if the list were expanded to include Southern metros over 1 million, Richmond would definitely fit...

No idea why the Carolinas aren't on the list. Greenville is close to the mountains and scenic areas but most importantly it is surrounded by flat to rolling land suitable for development. Add to that a great location between Charlotte and Atlanta. But there must be something in the city management, it would be interesting to study the difference between Greenville and Spartanburg to see why one has grown much faster than the other.

Along those lines, if/when Birmingham gets its act going it could rocket to the top with its scenic location and big beautiful downtown.

Guys,

The cities that you've mentioned were left off the list intentionally. With the exception of Mobile... I mean to add that instead of Shreveport x2.

I know Chattanooga and Huntsville and a few others are booming economically. This is a list of cities that haven't done as well. Or perhaps as far as I know. Seems like Knoxville is winning by a large margin with this list. I've been there but not for many years.

I purposely left Huntsville out of this poll as I think it would take the cake. It's growing much faster than any of these.

edit: Accidentally added Shreveport twice. Dang! Is there a way to edit a poll? If a mod sees this in time, please change a Shreveport to Mobile, AL!
You can see that Knoxville is easily winning this poll and I think would win over Huntsville. Greenville, SC should be in the poll and would have made the choice between it and Knoxville a tough one for me. Knox has a lot going for it including major university, state capitol, beautiful area, lower violent crime than most of the other southern cities. I am surprised Knox isn't more thriving...any thoughts on why?

Yep, that should be on the list and would have gotten many votes I suspect.

Where's Huntsville? It will be the largest city in Alabama within 10 years.

Obviously this isn't an exhaustive list/poll, but if it was and we're talking metros between 400K and 1M (roughly), the answer would be Charleston and I'm actually surprised it hasn't already been mentioned at this point.

Of the cities on the poll, it would be between Birmingham, Knoxville, and Baton Rouge.
