I would consider it a small metro. Kansas City, Charlotte, Indianapolis, etc are mid-sized. OKC is probably the least urban city its size in the country and therefore punches significantly below its weight. Tulsa and Omaha are both more urban and feel larger than OKC does. It's a tier below Memphis, Louisville, Jacksonville, etc and two tiers below Kansas City in my opinion.
LOL Tulsa absolutely does not feel more urban or larger than OKC, nor does OKC punch significantly below it's weight. Ridiculous.
Raleigh and Oklahoma City are not comparable. Raleigh is much larger. Raleigh's urban area is the same size as the entire Oklahoma city metro.
Raleigh (Triangle) pop. 2.2 million
Oklahoma City Metro pop. 1.3 million.
Oklahoma is a a decent size city however, but in no way is it a "BIG" city...
Raleigh isn't 2.2 million. And I've become a bit of a Raleigh supporter, but this is not an accurate depiction of how Raleigh feels or performs as a city...
Cities within a 20% radius of Raleigh's size, that Raleigh does not feel larger than: Buffalo, Richmond, and Memphis, three cities I am familiar with that absolutely do not feel smaller than Raleigh. And I find it very difficult to believe to believe that Jacksonville, New Orleans, or Salt Lake feel smaller than Raleigh...
I have been to Rochester and Birmingham and those are the only two cities that feel smaller than Raleigh. If OKC isn't a "big" city, theres no way you expect anybody to think Raleigh--not The Triangle but Raleigh--is a big city...

Raleigh and the Triangle are synonymous, just like OKC's metro. Wake county's (Raleigh) population is around 1.1 million people. Most of that population immediately surrounds the city. Urban Areas or UA is the best measurement of a city's general size. Raleigh is larger than OKC. It is what it is.
What's the population of the central loop and the sq mileage?
About 57,000 (from the 2010 census) in ~11 sq mi which is 5,182/sq mi, I took out the Fairgrounds and industrial areas on the perimeter for a truer number.
It'll be a bit higher today since the 57,000 figure is from 7 years ago.
