Given the choice between buying and living in a single family home inside the Loop in Houston (think: Montrose, The Heights) vs. buying a single family in the DC suburbs (think: Reston, VA or Rockville, MD)... which would you pick?

is this a real decision? If so what specific criteria are you looking for?
If not, why didn't you do inside either beltways? or at least in Houston's case the inner loop
DC suburbs but not those, I would prefer Arlington or Alexandria.
The reason I picked those were more to use comparative housing costs. I'm sure single family homes in Arlington and Alexandria are still far more expensive than a comparable home in a desirable "city" neighborhood in Houston.

From what I've seen thus far, houses in Reston, Rockville, etc. are comparable in price to similarly sized homes/lots in the inner loop in Houston. Just seems like you get way more bang for your buck living in a desirable city neighborhood vs. a suburb (even if that suburb is closer to a "more desirable" city, overall).
