1. Portland: decent downtown with cool hoods. Nice scenery. My favorite in this bunch of list.
2. Miami: nice weather, cool cuban culture and warm beaches
3. Denver: downtown, lots of adjacent hoods, and cool recreation/vibe
4. Austin: up and coming downtown with cool scene, thriving tech community and decent barbecue
5. Dallas: metroplex with cool downtown(meant Fort Worth), nice people and plenty to do
6. San Diego: good weather, beaches, nice suburban neighborhood districts and some attractions
7. Minneapolis: failing downtown, frigid weather, cool Uptown, Mall of America and 10,000 lakes: my least favorite city on the list

Yimby, I know you love downtown so much, and it's your #1 passion. In Minneapolis: downtown is not a strong point like in Denver, Portland, Philly and SF.
LOL! Did you actually read the article you posted? Name one city that hasn't screwed up in some fashion regarding urban planning / renewal in the last 100 years.
Anyway, a failing downtown area doesn't have over $1 billion in construction permits several years in a row. A failing downtown doesn't have a growing downtown residential population. A failing downtown isn't adding additional hotel rooms. A failing downtown doesn't attract 600+ conventions a year. A failing downtown doesn't see a million sq feet of office space absorbed each year.
Nicollet Mall is actually doing great since it has reopened. Block E is now Mayo Clinic Square and is far more valuable to downtown than Block E was. Hennepin Avenue is healthy so I'm not sure why you listed it. Nice try though.

Have you actually been to Minneapolis or any of the cities you listed? Downtown Denver was dead for decades. It's okay now, but I wouldn't say it's better than downtown Minneapolis. Downtown Portland is fine, but it's nothing special - just like the rest of the city. San Francisco is great - not sure why you brought it into the conversation.
