Over 90 posters voted last round! Thank you to everyone who has made this such a fun competition so far.

Objective

Identify CD's most popular American metropolitan area of 2019 through a knockout-tournament-style voting system.

Methods
  • Identify the 64 most populous metro areas in the USA
  • Subjectively assign each metro area to one of four geographic regions (East, South, Midwest, and West)
  • Seed each metro area within each region from 1 to 16 (based on current population) and create a tournament bracket similar to what the NCAA uses for its annual men's and women's basketball tournaments
  • Complete a round-by-round vote until a winner is decided!

EAST REGION FINAL

1) New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA MSA (defeated #16 Albany 50-7, #8 Providence 43-12, & #4 Boston 60-18)
vs
2) Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV MSA (defeated #15 Worcester 51-7, #10 Richmond 41-15, & #3 Philadelphia 47-31)

SOUTH REGION FINAL

4) Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA MSA (defeated #13 New Orleans 33-19, #5 Tampa 49-18, & #1 Dallas 52-32)
vs
3) Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL MSA (defeated #14 Birmingham 35-11, #6 Charlotte 42-22, & #10 Nashville 43-37)

MIDWEST REGION FINAL

1) Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI MSA (defeated #16 Omaha 51-9, #9 Cleveland 41-12, & #4 Denver 63-19)
vs
3) Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI MSA (defeated #14 Grand Rapids 54-6, #6 Cincinnati 40-14, & #2 Detroit 48-28)

WEST REGION FINAL

1) Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA MSA (defeated #16 Bakersfield 39-4, #8 Sacramento 39-9, & #5 Seattle 45-33)
vs
6) San Diego-Carlsbad, CA MSA (defeated #11 Salt Lake City 32-10, #3 San Francisco 25-22, & #7 Portland 49-25)

This poll will be open through Thursday night. Vote and share your thoughts!

/ 1) New York City -- I love DC, but NYC could be my second home. If life situations permitted, I'd live there in a heartbeat.

/ 4) Atlanta -- Another one of my favorite cities in NA. This one, I'm actually considering moving to, if relocating the kids doesn't pose too big of a challenge. I don't care much for Miami. Easy one for me.

\ 3) Minneapolis --

\ 6) San Diego -- Don't like L.A. Reminds me too much of Miami, but on the West Coast.

DC offers 1/10th of NYC.
Miami isn't for me.
Minneapolis offers 1/10th of Chicago.
San Diego is a dreamy coastal town, while LA is a sprawling, overgrown nightmare.

And yet, it's a largely considered an inferior city and MSA.

That should tell you everything.

Is it? Minneapolis-St. Paul Bloomington has a higher GDP per capita than Chicago-Naperville.

Minneapolis is a healthier city than Chicago, by that I mean healthier citizens.

The citizens of Minneapolis are also a happier citizenry than those in Chicago.

What Chicago does offer is more tall buildings and a greater number of outlets for rich white people to show off their money which = better city on CD

Which is a better city in your eyes, Boston or Minneapolis?

By that logic though San Diego also offers 1/10th of LA, if it's "bigger is better".

The only really balanced matchup is Miami vs Atlanta and the results show.
