On this thread, I am taking two cities in different parts of the nation (so the cultural, geographical differences are large...and should not be part of the equation), teaming them up, and matching them with other groups of paired cities to ask the question:
Which pair of linked cities is most alike?
So in essence, I've removed some of the cultural/regional aspects of the pair and focused on the other areas of similarity. The list below is not inclusive, but it is some:
• size of city
• size of metro area
• traditional (legacy) or more product of post-WWII
• politics
• diversity/ethnic groups
• tourist draw
• degree of eccentricity
• transportation
• downtown area
• economic: what type of jobs, etc./type of work force
• water
• and an infinite group of other intangibles
To assure no bias, I will arrange the groups alphabetically (NOTE: MULTIPLE VOTE OPTION):
Atlanta/Houston
Baltimore/St. Louis
Boston/San Francisco
Buffalo/Detroit
Chicago/Philadelphia
Dallas/Denver
Las Vegas/Orlando
Los Angeles/New York
Miami/San Diego
Minneapolis/Seattle
New Orleans/San Antonio
exceedingly well paired.....Boston is the San Francisco of the east coast. San Francisco is the Boston of the west. Well, sorta, anyway
small, compact cities in large metro areas, traditional (and important) downtown areas, both have major rapid transit lines (with BART and Muni offering the type of transit that MBTA combines), famed for seafood, leaders in festival type of shopping (Ghirardelli and Fanueil Hall were among the first), metro university powerhouses (Harvard, MIT, Cal, Stanford, etc.), SF is to LA what Bos is to NY, tourism, distinctive city personalities, iconic, famed tech centers (Silicon Valley is obviously by far the most famous tech corridor, by name that is, while Route 128 might be second), expensive housing, Nob Hill & Beacon Hill, North Beach & North End and pasta, landing on water at SFO and Logan, Giants and Red Sox in the heart of town with its urbanity, 49ers and Patriots out there....somewhere, Boston Brahmins and SF Nabobs, historic city of the northeast corridor/historic city of the west coast.
Truthfully, Boston is more like Philadelphia than San Francisco. When it comes to Boston and Philadelphia, no two cities are more alike yet received more differently.
Atlanta and Dallas is a better duo than Atlanta and Houston.
