Some are obviously desirable such as NYC, Boston, Toronto, etc., but once you get to the mid-tier sized cities, it becomes subjective. What cities do you personally think are desirable although that doesn't seem to be the popular opinion?

Chicago easily. While the corruption part is true, the crime part is way overblown and exaggerated by the media several times over. The nice parts of the city are extremely beautiful and hard to find any place else.

Another one would be Cleveland.

I may be biased, but Minneapolis. Most Americans either know little (or nothing) about the city, or simply write it off as an undesirable place due to the winters.

A lot of people seem to not realize that it's a very modern, progressive, generally upscale city.

St. Louis definitely has some VERY, VERY, real problems, but I agree that people underestimate the large swaths of the city that are very beautiful and very desirable. Whenever I took someone from out of town through St. Louis how much of the area actually has a really cosmopolitan feel. Especially through the central corridor.

Personally? I'd say Baltimore. The city certainly has its problems, but there's a pretty wide selection of beautiful, historic, and safe walkable neighborhoods which are ignored because about half of the city's land area is some form of ghetto. But it's the last remaining major U.S. city which is highly urban/walkable with decent transit which hasn't seen some sort of resurgence, so I think it's only a matter of time.

Desirability can be a subjective notion or evaluation... Many people for instance may not find living in the frozen tundra "desirable" at all. I guess there is no right or correct answer or wrong answer..but I'll think about these that many people don't really think about or come to mind about overall desirability HUNTSVILLE, AL - smaller well-run northern AL city with a long history of smart residents Gainesville FL - smaller city, university town, non-coastal appeal OCALA, FL - smaller city, beautiful topography, and laid back Birmingham, AL - mid size city, south side of the city - fairly good turnaround with bad history Miami, FL - large city with bad rep but is truly an international city in many ways Fayetteville-NWA - smaller city with a economic powerhouse reality

I don't think that ANY city (including NYC) is "obviously desirable". I love visiting there, but you literally couldn't pay me to live there. So there's a good bit of subjectivity to any and all cities anywhere.

Some cities that I really like that many don't would be Orlando, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Dallas, and Fayetteville, AR.
