About my zoned K-8 school: it’s a 5 on Greatschools because it has middle-of-the road test scores. It draws from the city’s two wealthiest, predominantly white and Asian neighborhoods, and the single poorest Black neighborhood. 40% of the student population is economically challenged and 40% of the population is Black.
The PPS website allows you to filter test scores by race. White and Asian kids score as well as kids in the “best” 90% white, wealthy suburban districts. The Black kids score better than poor Black kids at any other city school. If you sent your kids there, they would be around tons of other “smart kids”. Tons of doctors and university professors send their kids there. Your kids would also be around some poor kids. If that’s a problem, it’s not the school that’s the issue.
Exactly, our school is exactly the same. It really kind of sad how sites like greatschools contribute to segregation in our cities and suburbs, encouraging misguided decisions that cause people to flee their diverse vibrant walkable urban neighborhood for car-dependent bedroom communities full of privilege.

Or they take their kids out of public schools and put them in private for this very reason. Now I'm in Minnesota and my kids go to an average public school. Personally I'm not a fan. I feel the curriculum is very dumbed down compared to the A ranked charter school they went to last year. Some may be misguided. I would included myself in this conversation. Some want bragging rights and want to send their kids to the top rated schools.
I'm not sure what is ignorant...i think we are in agreement actually. I acknowledge there is a negative history with the AA culture, but culturally AA's have placed less emphasis on education than White and Asian cultures in US cities, such as NYC or Chicago.
Historically, again, that is not necessarily true and I think this plays into what others are saying in terms of socio-historical factors. I say that because a certain narrative gets told so much or there is some anecdotal, personal experience or 2 that gets to frame the story. I suggest taking a look at this article, which isn't that long, but will offer some balance: http://media.hoover.org/sites/defaul...7928928_79.pdf
Then you should be impressed with Fairfax and Montgomery county right at your door step.
I am. I don't know much about Fairfax, but I think the Montgomery County district does a very good job. I am much more impressed by that district than the best suburban districts in the KC area.

Both of those along with Arlington & Alexandria consistently rank high. NW DC also does well.

Canada! Our schools are all funded that same, regardless of whether that are in affluent suburban areas, or in inner city areas.
This is a school performance thread, not a school funding thread. In the metro Denver area, DPS is at or near the top in per pupil funding, but with some of the worst results. (There are some outliers)
