Yes, they've got a vibrant indie rock/emo scene with Saddle Creek records, Cursive, Bright Eyes, The Faint and a few others.
As far as independent/underground music goes, Omaha has always had a decent scene. The Ranch Bowl (now RIP) has had a lot of good bands come through and there's a few other decent venues to catch a band with anywhere from a couple people in the audience up to a few hundred. They also have a couple of long-lived indie music stores (Drastic Plastic, Antiquarium and Homer's, which is now a regional chain) which reflects pretty well on their music scene.
Tilly and the Wall too!!!
How can you hate Bright Eyes?!?! Even my grandma likes "Haligh"!
That's an ignorant statement to make. "Anywhere near it" includes probably far more culture and wealth than all of Little Rock (no offense intended).
Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Point, West Bloomfield, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Dearborn... I don't know what you think metro Detroit is, but it's no different than any other suburban metropolis with big malls, quaint downtowns, massive mansions, endless McMansion subdivisions, burgeoning loft developments, farmers' markets, and even, yes, Targets.
Look at suburban Pittsburgh or Cleveland or Baltimore to understand how an industrial core does not define a metropolitan region.
Sorry, I'm just not a big fan of the Rust Belt. No doubt metro Detroit has more wealth and culture than not just Little Rock but all of Arkansas. I wouldn't mind visiting metro Detroit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Winters too cold for me I guess. I doubt you would want to live in the South.
And McMansions and Targets are nothing special, you can find those in any metro area.
knoxville, tn - plain and simple. nothing to do there, just a 30 mile chain of strip malls and mcmansions along i-40.
Knoxville looked like it's in a beautiful little valley - but I was sort of pissed. I was headed east on i-40 in a car ... and the stupid divider wall on the freeway in the median was so high I wasn't able to see anything to the north of the interstate. So I don't even know what the skyline looks like even though I went through the city. Any reason they thought they needed a great wall on the freeway?!
