Seeing which language is spoken at home is one of many ways to see some sort of culture preserved in America. This is a look at 41 different languages and classifications by MSA. Unfortunately it's just the 1 year ACS, so there's only 53 MSAs in the list. This is only for people aged 5 and over. The order of the languages here is sorted by the totals per language of those 53 MSAs.

Interesting to know that while Hindi is the official language of India, it's not as widely spoken by Indian-Americans as I assumed. Also, in Chicago I find it peculiar that Hindi is less spoken than Urdu in Chicago. According to your list, it's the most spoken South Asian(excluding Arabic) language here. If I'm not mistaken, Urdu is more common in Pakistan than in India and is the official language there. In Chicago, there are vastly more Indians than Pakistanis and other South Asians.

I thought Urdu and Hindu were mutually intelligible but the former has an Islamicized writing system

Urdu is actually a lot more spoken in India than Pakistan, believe it or not. Also, languages like Gujarati are spoken in Chicago more than anywhere except NYC. I work with a ton of people who are originally from India, a lot of whom have been in the US for under a decade. All sorts of languages spoken like Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, etc. It's a huge country with many languages. A few years ago there was a guy on my team, and he was always on the phone at work. Even though half of my team was from India, nobody could understand what he was talking on the phone about because he spoke Telugu which almost nobody in the entire office spoke.

I think the stereotype is that everyone just speaks Hindi at home or something but that's far from reality.

One guy I work with a lot is from Kerala, and speaks Malayalam. I went through some of these stats with him and one or two of them he was like "I bet Dallas is high up there" so not surprising to some from India at all.

I lived in Dallas for several years and many dont realize just how massive the Indian community is there. Specifically Indians from places like Hyderabad, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Other than NYC, the Bay Area, and Chicago, it is the go to place for Indians in the US.

Yeah,, Dallas has a pretty big Indian community. My division has an office in the Dallas area, and I'd say a good 75% of the people I work with from that office are from India. We also had some people from here in NYC, originally from India, transfer to that office too. Besides the fact that they wanted actual homes with back yards for reasonable prices, all of them pointed to the weather as a big reason for the transfer as Dallas has more similar weather to where they're from than NYC. Not super surprising to some regarding the big community there, but yeah I think it's kind of lesser known that Dallas has a big Indian community.
