I'm thinking of big metro areas that have the lowest rates of violent crime and have very few blighted areas.

Cities that are like this for sure:
San Diego
Austin
San Antonio
Raleigh
Everywhere in the DC area except DC itself, which has very ghetto areas.

Don't know:
Charlotte
Phoenix
Hampton Roads (Virginia Beach is very safe, but heard terrible things about Norfolk and Newport News)

Cities that have a good reputation but are more ghetto than people think:
San Francisco (and we're not even mentioning Oakland yet)
Tampa?
Orlando

Everyone knows Miami is the crack capital of the nation, so that's no surprise that they have high crime rates.

Salt Lake City has some dodgy areas, but overall, it is a city that is pretty clean and not nearly as ghetto as others its size. Ive lived in Charlotte a short time and it definitely has hoods, but is probably better than many other major Southern and East Coast cities.

Seattle
Portland
Minneapolis- It has only North Minneapolis, but it's not desolated like what you'll find in your typical major Midwestern city.

New York City can be very dirty with a lot of garbage and rodents; but it doesn't really have any abandoned or truly ghetto areas.

A handful of neighborhoods throughout the city look a bit worn-out with a lot of poor immigrants, loiterers and housing projects (that are well-maintained on the outside); but it doesn't have that abandoned desperate post-apocalyptic look like most of Detroit, East Buffalo, North Philly and Baltimore.

In general, even the worst areas of NYC are not really dangerous unless you're either in a gang or you're walking around alone at night.

This is true of pretty much every city in the country contrary to what the media tells you. Anywhere, your risk of having violence against you drastically goes down if you aren't in a gang and/or doing something (buying, selling) with drugs.

Where did you get this idea from? Miami isn't the "Scarface" & the "Miami Vice" of the 1980's that you're probably thinking of. It isn't even the most dangerous city in Florida and it murder rate hit a 50 year low last year.

Miami used to be a murder capital. Now, not so much, as crime rates hit historic low

Newly released figures show that the fast-growing city of almost 500,000 — which routinely racked up close to 300 homicides yearly during the drug-fueled 1980s — set a historic low in 2018.

Miami recorded 51 homicides last year, according to statistics supplied by the city’s police department. That’s down from 59 in 2017 and its lowest yearly total since 1967.

Crime numbers in Miami are down across the board, city statistics show. Burglaries in 2018 are down 11 percent from the previous year. Robberies dropped 17 percent. Assaults and batteries are down 6 percent.

By the way when did drug use equate to a city to being "ghetto"?

That's progress, but still three times Seattle's murder rate.
