Interested in pros/cons based on general COL (utilities, groceries, etc.), Real Estate Costs, and Amenities and services offered.

Know that there is no sales tax or income tax in NH, and that property taxes are very high. Are services less that in MA (Newburyport)?

Portsmouth seems more vibrant than Exeter, which is also not coastal, and Newburyport seems to hahve the better balance with the benefit of being closer to Boston with commuter rail and bus service to Boston, but with the highest RE costs, followed closely by Portsmouth.

In another recent thread, you mentioned that prolonged periods of ice and snow can be very dangerous to you because you are a high fall risk. Therefore, if you return to New England after living in the Charleston, SC area for years, then I recommend you investigate coastal towns in southern Connecticut, southern Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, which will have shorter, less severe winters than Exeter or Portsmouth, NH. I think the coastal towns of southeastern Connecticut between Stonington and Old Lyme, inclusive, offer the best bang for your buck in New England.
