We started with 64 metros... the people have voted... and now we're down to 4!

Objective

Identify CD's most popular American metropolitan area of 2019 through a knockout-tournament-style voting system.

Methods
  • Identify the 64 most populous metro areas in the USA
  • Subjectively assign each metro area to one of four geographic regions (East, South, Midwest, and West)
  • Seed each metro area within each region from 1 to 16 (based on current population) and create a tournament bracket similar to what the NCAA uses for its annual men's and women's basketball tournaments
  • Complete a round-by-round vote until a winner is decided!

EAST REGION CHAMPION vs SOUTH REGION CHAMPION

1) New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA MSA (defeated #16 Albany 50-7, #8 Providence 43-12, #4 Boston 60-18, & #2 Washington DC 57-21)
vs
3) Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL MSA (defeated #14 Birmingham 35-11, #6 Charlotte 42-22, #10 Nashville 43-37, & #4 Atlanta 44-36)

MIDWEST REGION CHAMPION vs WEST REGION CHAMPION

1) Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI MSA (defeated #16 Omaha 51-9, #9 Cleveland 41-12, #4 Denver 63-19, & #3 Minneapolis 59-22)
vs
1) Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA MSA (defeated #16 Bakersfield 39-4, #8 Sacramento 39-9, #5 Seattle 45-33, & #6 San Diego 54-25)

This poll will be open through Sunday night. Vote and share your thoughts!

Miami and LA.

From the start of this, I would've suggested NYC, Chicago, Philly, and Pittsburgh as the final four.

I knew Pittsburgh didn't stand a chance against Philadelphia. While Pittsburgh punches far above its weight it still can't hold a candle to Philadelphia, and we Pittsburghers know that.

I would actually vote for Chicago if this ends up being an NYC vs. Chicago throwdown in the end. I think it would be VERY tight.

NYC and Chicago, as it should be.

The two best cities in the US.

This really does remind me of the NBA or NCAA tournament: a bunch of cities competing for the right to lose to New York lol. New York City on this site is basically the Golden State Warriors/New England Patriots/Barcelona/Kentucky/Duke all as one entity.

Genuine question: how exactly does Pittsburgh punch above its weight?

Most people would not think it’s a city of just 300,000 in a metro area of a little over 2,000,000.

Has the cultural, recreational, sporting, etc. amenities of a much larger city and metro area.
