Another list. We all know how it works. You hope your city is not embarrassed, then you think of excuses or "I told you so's" and criticize everyone with differing opinions as being homers or naysayers.
Pretty compelling list though, and for what it measures, I don't have too much argument. I definitely think there's more accuracy and truth involved here than other bunk lists like Thrill List or random Op-ed's where they simply list cities they haven't talked about in a while to keep things fresh.
The main thing I think this is missing is the Cost of Living factor and culture. It's hard to "rate" some of those because Cost of Living has to be compared to earnings potential and culture is a crap-shoot.
I can see why SF and San Jose topped this list, but those are places that I would never live due to culture and Cost of Living.

Top 20 for those who don't want to click.

Actually it listed the top 200 performing large cities and the top 200 performing small cities. It gave a summary for the top 25 large cities and the top 10 small cities.
I don't care to see arguing back and forth. I don't think there's that much to argue about here. It is what it is. Sure there's some noise and interpretive differences.
I like how they rate the tech GDP so heavily though because that's such an up-and-coming industry it probably gives a good picture of the areas that are most poised for more growth.
I was hoping for more arguing among cities this thread is uneventful so far.
I think what you meant is you want the Birmingham fanboys to weigh in. Looking at the data, they'll probably shy away from this one as this makes the Magic City look less magic. Sensitive bunch over there I tell ya.
They've got alot going for them it seems when you're there and go out on the town, but the numbers just have not caught up yet I don't think.

Keep in mind the time frame for most of the economic indicators here. Places that have begun to turn a corner within the last year or so won't necessarily rank highly on this list:
Quote:
Table 2 shows the components used to calculate the Best-Performing Cities rankings. The index
measures growth in jobs, wages, salaries, and technology output over five years (2012-2017
for jobs and technology output, and 2011-2016 for wages and salaries) to adjust for extreme
variations in business cycles. It also incorporates the latest available year’s performance in
these areas (2016-2017 for jobs and technology output and 2015-2016 for wages and salaries).
In addition, it includes a measure of 12-month job growth (August 2017-August 2018), to capture
recent momentum among metropolitan economies.
That's from page 6 of the report.
