On a recent cross country road trip I came through the South and made several stops. I was particularly enamored with New Orleans but also enjoyed my time in Georgia and the Carolinas and I'd like to go back for more when I get my next opportunity for another vacation. I have a poll, I'm leaving off Florida (yeah I'll probably get some heat for this, oh well), I feel since its so tourism driven it may dominate and distract and the southern culture is a bit diluted there, I'd rather discuss traditional southern cities with a focus on tourism. I'll acknowledge the southern flair in the panhandle and St. Augustine, on the poll I probably won't be able to include all, so if there is an other option and you can name your favorite in the thread. Some points of discussion...
New Orleans / Charleston / Savannah have the most to offer as far as being tourist places of the cities on this list. There are other regions like the Blue Ridge mountains region of North Carolina they are great to visit as well.

Yes the Blue Ridge into Virginia and Asheville, Williamsburg and the Outer Banks too
Louisville is egregiously omitted here and much bigger than many options.
It may not be the very top destination but it's very high on the list and a rising star due to bourbon tours.
From what friends have told me about cool neighborhoods and events- it seems like a fun place to visit. And I'm sure the bourbon tours you mentioned are quite fun.
But I think that the slight actually came from people a) not really even associating Louisville as being a southern city (though I'm not debating that it is) and b) not generally thinking of Louisville as a tourist city. It just doesn't come to mind- but hat's not to say that it shouldn't...
Given the criteria listed by the OP, it's hard to top NOLA in my opinion. But because I grew up (mostly) in FL, and then the 15+ years I spent in NC, my choices would be Charleston, Savannah, and Asheville- because they were accessible and I like all three. Ultimately, though, my top pick is Asheville, because I've always loved mountains, mountain culture, and how anomalous AVL and the High Country of NC is to much of the south as a whole.
