Yeah, a lot of people on the Coasts do put down Midwest cities because a lot of them think that none of them have beaches, mountains, oceans or nightlife they suck. But, some people in Midwest cities put down other Midwest cities too. Detroit and St. Louis are getting votes because of hype and hearsay.
You know I'm a Kansas City homer, and you should know that there's not much love lost between the two large cities that bracket Missouri.
Yet I've had nice things to say about St. Louis, which has a number of great places to visit and things to do, including one of the finest botanical gardens in the entire country. In my case, my comments aren't based on hype or hearsay, though my BBQ snobbery is based on where I grew up.

I think there's bias in this statement as well since I find it highly unlikely that you'd say the same thing about Cleveland if it were leading Detroit and St. Louis in this metric.

What "hype" does St. Louis have? It's probably the most shat-upon city in the country these days, both on City-Data and in the real world. If anything, it suffers from incessant negative hype.

I don’t think St Louis is “shat†on in the real world, this place is not the real world. Most are happy and eager to wake up in a hotel in a new city and begin an adventure. I’ve done it in StL many times but on this forum posters basically try and ruin your wet dream because their dreams are shattered. What many people don’t like though is excessive irrational homerism, it’s a huge turn off and probably makes others pile on excessively.
Don’t feed the trolls, use the ignore feature and don’t worry about what others think so much, i.e. be classy!
It has the Henry Ford Museum...just that alone puts it ahead of the rest.
I visited it as a “day trip” ....I live just west of Toronto, it was a long day,
but doable with an early start, leaving a 7 am.
I disagree. Milwaukee is the only city with a developed and lovely waterfront along Lake Michigan, other than Chicago. It also has a river running through it, like Chicago does.
Cleveland is on a lake, but Milwaukee's downtown lakefront beats Cleveland's. I'd rather enjoy the view of the beautiful lakefront, while taking in downtown and its museums, if that's what you like. When visiting a city, the last thing I want to do, is stay indoors, at a museum.
If you are into the outdoors, then Duluth is a no-brainer here. But it doesn't even feel like the Midwest, so I hesitated to include it. But it got my vote.
Exactly, it's certainly not my favorite. Chicago is fine, but as a city/place to go, it's not in my top 10. People on this site all have the exact same tastes. Ohhh ahhh muh skyscrapers muh density muh busy subway system. Very shallow.
Ohhh ahhh muh Urbanity. Good Post - Thanks for the laugh.
I'm not saying Chicago is shallow, but the people here are. There are probably good reasons to like Chicago, but the reasons I always see are pretty lame. As is so often the case, CD tends to be all about how important a place feels and what I can buy there.
God forbid someone on CITY data forums likes city qualities.
