They're both considered the cultural of America in one way or another more than any other state that's why i'm comparing them and to see others view on this. Based on your logic, you're pretty much saying no other state should be compared to California because it has the highest population lol NYC also has twice the population of LA then why are they always compared? NY state is not just limited to NYC there's another 10 million people living in the state.
