As a twist on these usual threads, I wanted to discuss the best areas for Black Americans outside the South. Generally the best black cities threads rightfully highlight cities in the South but a substantial amount of Black people live in the Northeast, Midwest, West, etc (45% of us) .
By South, I will use the US Census definition so this poll excludes DC, Baltimore, etc.
Factors to discuss are job opportunities, prevalence of black urban neighborhoods, black suburbs, good schools, wealth/high incomes, safety, upward mobility, cultural offerings, etc.
Interesting. Why Philly over NYC? And is Detroit that bad for blacks that its below Boston?
Philly to me reminds me of a Northeastern Atlanta in respect to black culture / heritage, NYC is more cosmopolitan.
Detroit may have the culture but lacks the economic standards most of the other metros have. I personally would rather Boston over it. Culture alone isn't everything.

Detroit has its issues, but I vehemently disagree with putting Boston over it.
1. Chicago
2. Philadelphia
3. NYC only (strong no to NJ and CT)
4. Los Angeles
5. Detroit
6. St. Louis
7. Bay Area
8. Boston
Why NYC only and a strong no to NJ? I’m only asking because some of the best places in the metro are in NJ and outside of the city.
Technically, CT isn’t in the NYC metro, but a small portion of PA is.
As for other, while it isn’t big, but it is in the top 100, the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown metro area meets a lot of criteria at a high level. It is one of the most residentially integrated metros, it has one of the smallest per capital income gaps between blacks and whites(also good for other groups), its black metro median household income is behind only a few top 100 metros, its proximity to employment centers in NYC via the Metro-North lines also for access to higher paying jobs; there are black residents in substantial numbers in urban, suburban and rural communities in the metro, there is political representation in multiple communities in the metro and schools are generally good and diverse.
