I moved from Chicago to LA. I prefer LA for these reasons:
1. Angelinos are much friendlier
2. The other transplants in LA from other major cities are much friendlier than the Big 10 townie transplants living in Lakeview/Lincoln Park in Chicago
3. While in LA, a subset of the population might judge you for your car, in Chicago you get judged as a young professional by where you eat, drink, and hang out.
4. Weather in LA is better
5. Much more integrated demographically in LA

Disagree with number 1. I'd say they are about the same. The Chicago attitude may be less friendly, but at the same time we don't have mexicans and blacks in a gang/race war and highway shootings.
Agree with number 2 and 3.
Agree with 4 if by the ocean. Inland (and by inland I mean about as far in as Hawthorne and beyond)? No thanks. Too dry, too monotonous, too hot, too smoggy.
Disagree with 5. Though Chicago does have more ethnic enclaves, people get along pretty well here and can live side by side. Blacks are the main group that is segregated the most, the same as LA.
Chicago is a great city but it's Los Angeles for me. Love its uniqueness, its old and new architecture. The weather is fantastic. The restaurant choices are from around the world and in abundance. Plus seeing beautiful flowers and plants in the winter is so nice.

I have been to Chicago and thought it was a wonderful city.
I've never however been to LA. Would love to go someday.
