Yes difficult, but Honolulu is very isolated while Miami is crime ridden. So it really comes down to would you rather have a vacation home in Miami or Honolulu, and I would say Honolulu.

Detroit was followed closely on the list by the greater Memphis, Tenn., and Miami, Fla., metropolitan areas. Those three were the only large cities in America with more than 950 violent crimes committed per 100,000 people.
Note how they found the stats.. It's for the metro.
I really don't think there are that many similarities, other than weather and the tropical environment. I was in Honolulu yesterday for a meeting and although I'm glad I don't live there (I'm on Kauai) I LOVE visiting there. Hawaii is an entirely different history than Miami. There is obviously a strong polynesian and asian influence, with some German and Portuguese roots. Miami's history lies quite strong with the Spanish and now with Latin American immigrant. The traditions and characteristics are very different (IMO) from those of the Filipinos/Japanese/Chinese that have infiltrated the islands. Also, crime is a lot worse in Miami than in Honolulu and Miami is a HUGE city, against which Honolulu can't really compete due to its isolation and its location on the island of Oahu.
Albeit not nearly as significant as Miami, there is actually a substantial hispanic population in Hawaii.... around 8-10%
Hawaii is just too amazing... and the surrounding islands have so much to offer. This is from Kauai.
