Many of their streets in older parts of the city are not lined with just strip malls but storefronts that face the sidewalk along major streets but also strip malls. Even in San Francisco there are areas with strips malls with lots of single family homes.
All cities have different areas but its charachter is defined by what is more prevalent...

In LA proper it's almost hard to find a strip mall.

They exist in just about EVERY city in the country, including the oh-so-superior, urban high-priestness of New York.
Yes they do. But the real question is what is more prevalent? Strip malls in New York are an exception not a rule, the city has very few actual malls that are so typical for suburbia. There has to be a way to differentiate between a city and suburbia and exsitance of strip malls and high use of public transportation criteria are one way of doing it.

I know that. We all do.

The way to differentiate is to admit that all cities are not the same, came of age in different periods and that the urban variety that exists in our country is not something to ridicule and bash when someplace doesn't measure up to YOUR definition of what makes a place urban - or not.

LA has more land in the city proper but NY has more people.

Right. Kind of like an urban version of "no child left behind" i.e. let's lower the standards so everyone is happy? No. You have to have some standards.
