The rest of the world pays a WHOLE LOT MORE attention to the Summer Olympics than even we in the US do. Most of the world's countries have a lot more riding on the games (national unity and pride) than we do.

As to the skyline thing: I feel fairly certain that the average American, when shown comparable photos of both the Houston and Atlanta skylines, would be quicker to identify the Atlanta skyline over Houston's. On top of being more prominently featured in the national media, the Atlanta skyline is simply more distinctive than Houston's rather boxy monolithic skyline.
I am going to agree with you that Atlanta is more recognizable, but as for the skyline, I honestly say that would be a toss up.

Honestly, I'm not sure the average American could identify any skyline outside of NYC, Chicago, maybe LA (movies), Seattle (Space Needle), St. Louis (Gateway Arch), and San Francisco (Golden Gate Bridge).

You could make that same case for Dallas (two tv shows), Miami (movies and the Finals the past couple years), New Orleans (the Superdome), and Vegas (... do I really have to explain?)

Atlanta is best. WHAT recognition does Houston have besides being the 4th largest city in the U.S.A . Plus nobody even thinks about Houston being big. Dallas is the big "Dawg" in Texas!!!

Houston, we have a problem...

Just because you don't know anything about Houston doesn't mean that the city isn't well-known. Try reading up on a subject before embarrassing yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston

I think both cities are very well known globally however I think Atlanta may be easier for folks to attach an image or event to. Houston is famous for more business related things such as Oil, Medical Services and Nasa projects in the past. Atlanta has a lot more cultural references that people can relate to. Atlanta's location in the Eastern US and it's airport also helps expose more people to it when traveling so more people become familiar with what it has to offer.

And you resurrected an old, 70+ page thread just to say what dozens of people have already said. Do you feel proud?

It depends on the metric that is being used:

Atlanta would be more well known in a media/cultural sense, due to the proximity to the East Coast, CNN, Olympics, etc. Lots of famous African Americans hail from the city (Tyler Perry, Andre 3000, Soulja Boy), and have contributed in making Atlanta known as the African American mecca of the USA.

However, Houston is more well known in an economic sense; it is a viewed as one of the great powers of America, being that it is the energy capital of the world. Houston, historically, also had a lot of press as being the city of the future, a city that made sure dreams, ambitions, and the impossible would come true via NASA. In recent times, the NASA association with Houston has died down, but it will pick up again as the new Space Program kicks in.
