True, Washingtonia are all over Southern California. I have never seen any in Florida, not even in Miami. The Sable Palmetto is also the state tree of South Carolina where I currently live.
You mean the ones with the huge trunks? I have seen a couple like that, but they just don't grow that way here. Its funny how you say 'Not even in Miami" as if that would be the place you think you would see them. But there are types of palms that grow in Tampa that are more rare in Miami. The Washingtonia being one of them. Coconuts and royals are the most popular South Florida, while Washintonia, Sables and Queen palms are in Central Florida.

Huge trunks? Maybe you are talking about date palms. I'm talking about the really tall palms you see in Southern California. Like these..

Those are lollipops! The city of Los Angeles don't even plant those native palms as street trees anymore because they don't provide any shade. They look cool since they get incredibly tall aren't very practical. The California fan palm grows in Florida; they may not be as tall but you see them everywhere.

Here's some native palms in Pasadena
And I'm thinking those so called California fan palms in Florida are really tall Sabals like what we have here in Charleston. Those California palms thrive in arid climates. Sure some folks may have planted a few in Florida but you can't say that they are at all coomon and I don't beleive I have every seen one there. Here is a tall sabal that we have around Charleston..
Those tall skinny palms are everywhere in Los Angeles but are sort of stupid for street trees and why the city doesn't plant them anymore. Here are photos of some streets in LA

Date Palms? No. I definitely know the difference between a date, a sable, and a washintonia. The washingtonias with the really think trunks are more rare in Florida than the really tall ones. But there are still washingtonias all over Central Florida. They even grow wild in some areas.(I would post pictures, but since I got Mozilla, I can't figure out how ). Although, our tallest washintonias in Florida are still an average of 5 to 10 ft shorter than California's tallest.

You don't have to posts pictures. Just post the links. I would really like to see them.
