I could honestly say the exact same thing about MLB, but it's just a different opinion. NBA at least has action and people moving around constantly, while half of a baseball game is a bunch of people standing there doing nothing.
Baseball has been "standing there doing nothing" since at least 1869, so it must be doing something right. It's interwoven in American culture like no other sport. If you score with a hot girl, depending on how far you go, you "get to second base." If said girl denies you, you "strike out." If you land the big deal at work, you "hit a home run." Life "throws you a curveball"; courts have a "three strikes your out" policy; ideas "come out of left field." What names are more familiar in America: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Willie Mays or Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain? What franchise is more popular and universally known: the Yankees or the Lakers? People instantly recognize the logos for almost all the baseball teams. When you see the LA for the Dodgers or the P for the Pirates or the C for the Reds or the A for the Braves or Chief Wahoo for the Indians or the B for the Red Sox, everyone knows instantly what city they stand for. Could people do that with the Pacers, Thunder or Bucks logos? No way.
And baseball attendance dwarfs pro pro basketball's.
College basketball, however, is compelling, interesting and far more balanced.
Let's go back and read my post again. How does that answer my question as far as "on the planet" goes?
I think he addressed it by clarifying that the Indy 500 is the largest single-day sporting event on the planet. If you know of one that draws more, by all means let us know.

Ok, we must not be getting what I am trying to say here, so lets try again...
Where are links, facts, etc that say it is the largest on the planet, single-day event out there? Word of mouth is one thing, as is personal opinion, other than that, I am not buying that BS.
Indy is a younger city, and actually has a lot of cool things going for it. Most people just assume Indy is some representation of Indiana, when it's not.
