What if you could just spend summers in Portland or Seattle? Which one would you choose? I live in San Diego and I'm thinking of living in Seattle or Portland from June-Sept,

If you can pull it off honey, go for it.
I've lived in Seattle 25 yrs, and quite frankly, at this point I'd choose Portland. Why? Because I'm craving some CHANGE, and because of Portland's proximity to wine country and the coast. And it's a damn fine foodie town
Oregon. Both are gorgeous states, but Washington seems to think it's just too cool for school, and that's not something I'd want to deal with. Plus, I'd have a higher standard of living in Oregon on that salary than in Washington. There are areas of Washington where I could easily live ... but that's not in the Seattle area.
Washington's tax burden is actually higher than Oregon's, so that's not a consideration.
I like OR a lot, but I would go WA State b/c Seattle is a much more beautiful cosmopolitan city then Portland and b/c no state income tax would put $8k more in my pocket a year ($80k over 10 years). You could always live in a cheaper area outside of Seattle and the cost of living wouldn't be much different. Seattle area a has much better job situation, tons of big companies and better career opportunities then Oregon too.
The sales tax is not as bad as people think. Most people don't buy a big ticket item like a car every year. And even if you spent $10,000 on "stuff" that was taxable, that is only $1,000 a year. And many wouldn't even spend that.
Also I like being closer to Vancouver BC. I do like Bend OR a lot. WA does not have a ski town to get a way to anywhere near as cool as Bend. OR Coast is nice too, but you can access that from WA State. Southern OR is nice too.
I love you, Oregon, you're the greatest state of all.
I love you in the winter, summer, spring and in the fall.
I love your fertile valleys; your dear mountains I adore.
I love your grand old ocean and I love her rugged shore.
If you were given a fairly decent paying job (around 100K a year), but the job was in Oregon or Washington State, which state would you choose to live in and why?
I've lived in both and prefer Washington. For starters, you likely will make more in Washington and then you will keep more of it due to no state income tax and where I have lived, the property taxes were less in Washington also. It's true that you will likely have to pay more for your house in Washington as we did. Oregon (Portland) just doesn't have as much going on as Washington (Seattle).
Oregon- Bend. Much better climate. Between Portland or Seattle I'd pick Portland b/c I like Oregon the state so much more. Much better coastline and mountain recreation in Oregon IMO>
I'd choose Washington.
Oregon's great too, but I'd choose Washington. I really like Seattle, the city that brought us Nirvana.
