But yes, Chicago is not in the same league as NYC, and it's a tough argument for anyone to say LA is, too (this would have to bank a lot on the idea that LA's entertainment media is incredibly influential).
Of course, the original post asks nothing about which one is bigger or has the greater GDP.
no its 9 million vs. 22 million CSA, which is 2.5X but NYC has many Cummoters from the Philly area, though it isnt counted because it's less than 5% or 255,000 people

MSA-wise is 9.5 million to 18.9 million. CSA-wise 9.8 million to 22.2 million. So somewhere between slightly less than 2x for one statistic to about 2.25 for the CSA.
Chicago, of course, isn't counting commuters from outside its official designated MSA/CSA because those stats from the census bureau use the same standards as the one for New York.
Really though, you can't take a shorthand of about double the population when stats are between 1.99 and 2.25?
I've never been to Chicago, so I can't compare it.
But NY and LA are very different.
If you're a cold person, have a hard shell. NY is best for you.
You shouldn't move to NY if you have a open heart, because it will eat you up and take advantage of you, and you'll end up turning cold like most of the city. I'm only taking about Midtown Manhattan, not other 4 boroughs.
LA is more laid back, a friendlier atmosphere, you just need a car to get anywhere. The pubic transportation is a problem compared to NY. But its cheaper to live, easier way of life. Because its basically a big beach. And the weather is always nice, its real chill.
If you want to party, I would say LA is better. If you're focusing on your career, than NY has more opportunities for work but its a Dog eat Dog mentality in NY.

Doesn't seem really useful to quibble.
But the population outside Chicagos CSA is very low, so 5% is only a few tousand not close to 300,000 from Philly or Hartford
