New York: yeah, it tops almost all of these lists and with good reason. It has everything
Los Angeles: Some parts are cheesy, but there is a lot that is cool about the place
New Orleans: Such a unique, quirky place...full of music, art and food
San Francisco: Northern California cool
Seattle: highly educated, birthplace of grunge
Miami: a bit flashy/glitzy for my taste, but quite a scene and beautiful natural scenery
Austin: live music and a liberal holdout in largely conservative Texas
Atlanta: the cultural center of the southeast
Washington, DC: lots of pompous/pretension here but also very international/sophistication
Boston: lots going on here
Honorable mentions to Chicago, Minneapolis and Vegas if you like the flash.
Here's how I see it. A cool city is something that you would be proud to put up on Facebook and want you friends and acquaintances to see and go "look at that guy, he's in X city, that's cool". For that reason, you wouldn't really want to advertise that you were in a place that wasn't so cool. Right? Even an average city in coolness isn't worth mentioning.
My list (Of the big cities, in no real order, all would make me go "wow, you're there, lucky, that's cool.")
New York City
San Francisco
Los Angeles
Las Vegas
Miami
New Orleans
Chicago
Seattle
Honolulu
Washington DC

The main reason I think NYC is topping the majority of these lists is the massive diversity and history NYC has. It's easily the most diverse city in America by a wide margin. No matter what your tiny, subjective, niche definition of cool is, NYC probably has something for you.
New York
San Francisco
Los Angeles
Seattle
Chicago
Boston
New Orleans
Philadelphia Dallas
Miami
Dallas cool, Seriously?
Maybe back in the day with places like Starck Club it was cool for a brief moment in time...to locals anyways. That kinda helped put Dallas on the map.
