When the south as whole and just not the states that border Georgia start looking toward Atlanta for everything those year old articles will have some merit.

Slow down there. Houston has a bright future as it continues to diversify it's economy. But give it time before saying LA or NY.

I don't Classify Houston as "South", anyways even Houston was South or not, I would still vote for it. In general it's a better city.
Well whether its a better city or not is HIGHLY subjective.Even if the economy DID surpass L.A.Houston still will not rival L.A. as a cultural center, media, education or regional center. Its prominence is not well regarded. There are several world publications that rank it well above its piers.Atlanta is a Beta + city.If you search several post back we have even given this reason.
Are those study's subjective? To some degree yes,but they are major none the less as a fairly respected way worldwide in which we cities are regarded.

I will try to summarize the "South" like this:
Capital: Atlanta
International City: Miami
Economic Giant: Houston
Largest MSA: DFW

As with the nation, the capital of the South is not the most populated (city or metro), most international, or biggest economy. NYC, LA, and Chicago all rank higher than DC in these regards. Atlanta is the capital of the South due to location and cultural ties to the region. With the other cities mentioned it would be hard to argue whether or not, I hate admitting this, they are culturally Southern. Atlanta, you don't have a doubt its Southern. That's why it is considered the capital of the South.

Houston by far this decade has boomed faster and larger than the other big 3 Southern juggernauts, but it won't pass LA probably until next century, if ever. But, this is America. Who knows what will happen?

I doubt it will take that long. Houston went from a 200 Billion economy to a 400 billion economy in 4 years. In other words it cut the distance between it an LA from 500Billion to 300 billion in 4 years, why do you think it will take a century to catch up?

Exactly. They act as if the current major cities, with the exception of New York (which will fall one day), can't become shells of themselves within the next 15-20 years. Some will already argue that the lowest of cities have gotten as low as they can get and are about to slowly rise, while the top cities are reaching their peaks. Not to mention new contenders are starting to enter the picture.
