Hard one and it's what I've been asking myself as I will be moving back state side in the next two years. If money was no object I'd live somewhere close to the Peninsula, maybe Big Sur, Carmel (yeah I know). I'll most likely settle for Santa Barbara where I have lived before.

Austin is great, but I'm hearing it's not the same place it was.

Well the water is actually WARM here in Texas...although the water can be murky, and sometimes Jelly fish are abundant.

More than anything else, it depends on the kind of social culture you want. In California, people are very laid back, you can find plenty of people to have intellectual conversations with, nobody will make you feel like an outsider. Texas is, well, just the opposite.

I used to go skimboarding alot on Bolivar Peninsula. The murkiness of the water is definitely a drawback but I still always had fun there. Never got stung by a jellyfish there but I think i've just been lucky.

California HANDS DOWN!!! The climate, the landscape, cities with more culture and personality, plus I feel that I just fit in there better. I've never felt like an outsider in California, while I have for most of my time in Texas, and I've lived here for 13 years and have traveled to nearly every corner of the state.
