Is it any city that is atleast 10% black ? 15% ? 20% 25% ? Or is your definition more strict and you only consider cities that are majority black to have a large black population ?

I say cities that are atleast 20% and up. My hometown of Waco Texas has black population of about 22%, but if you ever went there, you'd definatly think it was higher.

I believe for large cities Gary, Indiana is it-but as what another poster asks-"Why is this so important" The most important thing is if the city is safe and if it is well run. This applies to the school system and other local government agencies with it's jurisdiction.

I agree, that seems like a decent African-American population for a city, particularly if 30% is more so situated in certain neighborhoods than others for example Oakland is 35% African-American although Oakland also falls in the Bay Area (SF, San Jose, E. Bay, etc) which African-Americans are numbered in the few. I'd say anwhere with over 5% Asian-American population would be a significant number (Nationally 4.4%) since Asian-American population is generally dispersed and well the hispanic population at 15% nationally seems to be well numbered in just about any city or sun-belt state today, I'd probably put it at any city with over 20%.

How would one be able to find out if a city is safe and well run without asking the question of whether alot of blacks live there? That doesn't make sense.

The US is 12.35% black. I would say (my opinion) 18% or more is a large black population and 6% or less is a low black population and any population between 6% and 18% is a medium black population.

I read a book in 2008 called The Big Sort which makes the case that we are increasingly moving to be near people like ourselves but it's not just in traditional categories like income and race but in several different categories including political ideology, values, lifestyle, etc.
