The history of gangs in Chicago and Los Angeles is very interesting. Those histories are an integral part of American history. The sociopolitical scene was right for these entities to take root.

Had there been no Northern factories, the migration northward may not have happened. Larry Hoover, Tookie, and David Barksdale were all from the south. They came up north as children with their parents.

You can't separate the Civil Rights movement from L.A. and Chicago gangs. In fact, J. Edgar Hoover attempted to pit the Black Panther Party (BPP) against the Blackstone Rangers (BSR). He did not want the head of the BPP to sit atop of the body of the BSR.

My children need my attention. Gotta go. Read the history. There is a Blood, I can't recall he name. However, check out his doc.: Bastards of the Party. Crips: Made in America is pretty good also. Gotta go!

Chicago has a gang history that stretches long before the Civil Rights movement... it's a huge part of the culture of the city. You're right about LA though.

If I'm not mistaken, the black gangs(GDs, Vice Lords, Black P.Stones) in Chicago are bigger than the Crips and Bloods in LA. Chicago also have alot of hispanic gangs; ex. Latin Kings, Latin Counts, Two Six. Chicago is not big on Asian gangs like it is in LA and other places.
I think LA and Miami and Fort Lauderdale have the most thugs and wannabe thugs in the US.

There have always been gangs in LA, the hispanic gangs in particular are just as old as gangs in Chicago if not older.

NYC is still infested with crime, we do have police precinct cover ups that don't report the total crime %, NYC is deemed safe when its still very possible to get shot at any moment. Use spotify and type in beford stuyvesant or east williamsburg/bushwick.

Why is all the talk about the North East part of the US?

I think Miami and Fort Lauderdale is the worse in the country for wannabe thugs or prison look.

Agreed! However, most, I would assume, don't think of Jeff Fort and the Blackstone Rangers when they think of the Civil Rights era. Some people don't think about the Black Panther Party when they think about the Civil Rights era. History tells us that J. Edgar Hoover did not want those two factions to merge and cooperate. Subsequently, Fred Hampton, like Dr. King, was slaughtered.

All large cities do this, The NYPD was just the first to do it and you can thank COMPSTAT for that.
