in other words, any city in the US that isn't NY,LA, Chicago, or Houston, if we're just going by city proper (which isn't a good way to measure an areas population, anyway)

According to your own data Denver would fall into a Large sized city, so no matter how you look at things, city proper or metro area, it shouldn't be considered a "Medium Sized City"

The skyline of the city of Irvine, CA with a population of 200,000. Located in Orange County about thrity five minutes south of Los Angeles city limits.
