My fiance and I are looking at relocating to either Houston or West Palm Beach. He will be transferring through his company and I will be beginning a career in Occupational Therapy. We are in our mid 20s and will be newly married. We would like to be within an hour from the beach, a good nightlife, sporting events nearby, and fun things to do! Thanks in advance

Your listing proximity to the beach as your first criteria should steer you away from Houston. While it is 50-70 minutes from the beach, its beach is one of the most disappointing ones you will ever find.
That said, Houston covers the rest of your list pretty well.
Are we talking metro or city proper? Because Houston is over 600 square miles compared to 58 square miles in WPB. If we took in 600 square miles around WPB, then you would have a lot more to do than Houston. Miles and miles of tropical beaches, Multiple nodes to choose from for nightlife: Clematis street, City Place, Delray Beach and Los Olas in Fort Lauderdale. Miami beach is a ways from WPB, but it is still very accessible and nothing in Houston comes close to that. If you enjoy water recreation then there is no comparison(WPB).
One advantage of West Palm Beach is that its warm weather is moderate by the prevailing winds, which blow from the ocean. I can't speak to Houston, as I've not been there; but one hears alot about heat and humidity when that city comes up.
