Technically, Des Moines isn't the largest metro area in IA, it's Omaha/Council Bluffs.

York is included and even driving on the expressway with no traffic, if you stick close to the speed limit it is going to take you 30 minutes to get to Portland; through woods, farmland, and very tiny towns and villages. Even counting going to Brunswick to the north you go through small town USA all the way there. It isn't metro in design, feel, or look.

this sounds about as stupid and misleading as the tn situation...nashville/davidson county, tn metro...including half of rural middle tn...chattanooga/hamilton county and about half of rural southeastern tn, and knoxville/knox county and a good part of rural central east tn. memphis, the far larger true metro, counts its principal city of approximately 700,000 (memphis) and shelby county (925,000) + its metro counties of tipton, fayette, tn and the immediate mississippi counties to the south + the western arkansas county of crittenden (west memphis). memphis has a much denser urban population in its metro, unlike the rural metro of the lesser sized cities mentioned.
