I have lived in both areas, and I have to pick Atlanta. I think L.A. has one of the highest cost-of-living ratios for what you get in the nation. Conversely, Atlanta has one of the lowest. With its high crime, clogged roads, polluted air and terrible schools, most areas of L.A. are barely habitable. It's crazy to me that people pay top dollar to live that way. Atlanta, on the other hand, lacks this or that. Some complain about its sprawl or lack of "character" but if you look at the COLA and think about what it would cost to live somewhere else that has all of the amenities Atlanta has, it becomes obvious why this area is booming.
high taxes; liberal Hollywood types; terrible crumbling roads; natural disasters including: earthquakes, mud slides, and wild fires; illegal aliens and gangs running wild; tiny one story slab houses on postage stamp sized lots for huge money; terrible air pollution, terrible traffic.
Atlanta's not perfect, and there is pollution, traffic, and even illegal aliens here, but I've been to L.A. several times and just can't stand it. It reminds me of Miami in some ways....like another 3rd world country within the US. Not all of SoCal is like that though, and San Diego seems much more to my liking.
lt's not really a realistic comparison. L.A is the second largest city in the nation, Atlanta is the 33rd. It's like comparing NYC to Fresno or Chicago to Tulsa, Oklahoma, just not happening.

Actually, it's not all that lopsided, especially if you review a similar area and population. Los Angeles is a much bigger city, if you review the area within the city limits, whereas the City of Atlanta is much smaller, but when you add the immediate Atlanta suburban metro counties (not the whole MSA), things are a bit closer.
If money wasn't an issue, I'd pick L.A. in a heartbeat. More things to do, diversity, nightlife,etc.
