And I should say that I have absolutely no "hatred" toward NYC, either. It really is a great city.

But, so is LA.

What standard? If you're talking about California as that standard, then I see your point. No state is close to Cali in GDP. But Out of the top 5 highest states for GDP, 2 of them are in the South, and one of them is number 2.
