Well LA's skyline is nothing spectacular compared to Houston's. It won because of it's mountians, if it weren't for that, this poll could've went anywhere.

One thing is absolutely certain, and having spent quite a bit of time in LA, I am not being biased. Houston's food scene is miles away superior to LA, both in quality and variety. LA's food scene is trendy and too ambitious. San Francisco destroys LA in the food category. And as much as I love SF, Houston just has so many more choices of cuisine. Besides, NYC, no other city in the US can compare to Houston's food scene. And that is basically because no city in the world can compare to NYC's quality and quantity of great restaurants.

Sure, LA has great beaches, absolutely!

LA is ridiculously superior to Houston when it comes to the amount of acitivites you have access to, the desert to the east, beaches everywhere, mountains nearby. LA also has a world class nightlife and a great restaurant selection.

Laugh all you want, Houston's restaurant scene is much better than LA and pay attention in the next decade: it's finally getting the recognition we have all known about for years. Google: "REEF Bon Appetit" as one example.

If you honestly feel that a major coastal World Class city on the scale of Los Angeles can't measure up to little 'ole Houston's restaurant scene, than I would love to have some of the kool-aid you're drinking.

That must be some mighty potent stuff.

Billy Bob's is in Dallas; great that you are so geographically enlightened. Honestly, LA's food scene is not one of the top nationwide. Nobody that has spent even a slight amount of time in Houston will refute we are top notch in that field. Maybe humor us with where you have been in Houston to add some validity to your slander.

Honestly, I'm not sure where your ignorance is coming from. So, here it is; I am truly someone with no experience with good food. My favorite food cities are NYC, London, Houston, Buenos Aires, San Francisco, Barcelona in that order. Go ahead and list yours.

As we say in Texas when it deserves to be said, Bless your heart. Oh, bless your heart.

For the TRULY geographically challenged, the original Billy Bob's was in your lovely suburb of Pasadena. Try again.

As far as your world travels, I'm in the travel industry and I can run circles around your list. It wouldn't be fair though, since I do have an advantage. You would lose - badly.

I'm an LA native.

Haven't lived in Houston but I've been there several times. Moderator cut: orphaned

However, between Houston and Los Angeles, the only thing I can say is that if you are FLUSH WITH CASH, then a person can live very well in Los Angeles. If you are of MODERATE INCOME, a person can live well in Houston.

For the money, the "housing stock" in Houston is outstanding...$ 225,000 buys you an all-brick "mansion" that will probably be too big for "empty nesters." In Los Angeles, the "housing stock" is deplorable. However, Houston can be very uncomfortable for 4 months out of the year, while coastal Southern California is the ONLY place in the United States that features a bona fide Mediterranean climate...and that's reflected in the housing prices.

Great post, robertpolyglot.

As a native Angeleno, and someone who has traveled to Houston - what is your take on Houston being a superior restaurant city to Los Angeles?

Aarggh. Tough question. I think LA has, and will always have, excellent restaurants...and I've been to some very good ones that I'm sure have changed names since our family left the area. But, I think that Houston, with its old money, medical centers and oil wealth, demands, and has, great restaurants as well. I only went to the more "ya gotta go" tourist grub places when in Houston and was last there for 3 days.
