My husband, young child, and I are looking to relocate from Chicago. The cost of living is too high here and the winters are awful. We are debating between the Tampa and Raleigh areas. I have family in S. Florida and in DC.

We are looking for a city that is a great place to raise a family (ie great schools), low to moderate traffic (we live in Chicago so almost anything would be an improvement), green spaces, culture, kid-friendly, close knit community-feel, lower cost of living and affordable housing. We are very environmentally conscious and we would love to find a place where people share our values.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would choose Raleigh if you want to have a decent paying job. Florida's wages and job opportunities are horrible.

Wow! Talk about a night and day comparison.
If you love the water then Tampa
If you love trees and green, Raleigh

On an economic front one should look to Raleigh. NC is growing and should surpass Georgia in population during the next census count. Florida is having so many issues. If you live in Georgia, like me, you feel like your under a daily invasion from Florida Mostly folks running from high property taxation and insurance cost that are insane.
Tampa is beautiful though and safe to say Florida's best city in comparison to Miami, Jacksonville, and Orlando.

This is a tough call. With the bust, many Florida's home values have dropped in double digit percentages, but Raleigh still wins.

Your job prospects in NC are better though as Florida is in a deep recession.

Way better schools, quality of life, job prospects and overall friendliness in the Raleigh area.
