The best I ever had was neither. It was at a restaurant in Murrell's Inlet, SC. It was a puree and had a golden cast to it...absolutely delicious. I would love to have the recipe.
Yes.
Legal Seafood is even popular in New England where there is a lot of competition for the seafood dollar.
I would have to add that Legal's chowder is not my favorite. That would be The Sail Loft on the Boston Waterfront.
It's thick and they put dill in it. Holy Crap is it good!
Thanks - I'll check it out!
I love dill, putting it in chowdah sounds pretty yummy.
The best I ever had was at a fantastic place in Portsmouth, NH called the Ferry Landing. Wonderful chowder and seafood.
BTW New Englanders, we just got a new Legal Seafood in Atlanta. Should I check it out?
First off, I chose New England Clam Chowder.
Second, try Legal Seafoods (the Chowder is the highlight), but don't assume that it's ideal seafood. It's pretty much mediocre when compared to the quality seafood joints up this way.

Definitely check it out. The chowder I had from the Legal in Boston Harbor was really good, though not necessarily the best I've ever had. However it beats the pants off Campell's Chunky haha. Another chain that has great chowder is The Chart House on Long Wharf in Boston.
Thank god this poll is as one-sided as it is or I would have lost my faith in humanity.
A some-what un-related chowder fiasco story: I was in Maine one time, way the **** up going kayaking on the Kennebec and I stopped to get some food. The menu contained simply "chowder", and being from Mass that only meant one thing to me- and I assumed in Maine of all places it would mean one thing also. So I was suprised when they brought out some pale yellow porridge looking stuff. CORN chowder!! Now, It was somewhat tarnished for me because I was looking forward to real chowder but the idea of corn chowder now puts a foul taste in my mouth and mind. I'll have to give it a fair 'nother shot some time. What I learned is to be cautious when ordering chowder if you are more than 20 miles or so from the Atlantic.
