Is it possible that LA Metro(CSA) will Surpass NY Metro(CSA)? (cost, populations)

I Been hearing that LA Metro Will Pas Ny Metro in Population for a while now. Do You think LA metro (CSA) will Pass Ny metro (CSA) in Population.What year would this happen,try to predict.LA Would have to provide more trains,subways,buses etc b/c with all those people moving in, the freeways would be packed and the Water Issue they might have to look at Desaltination and cost of living will it go up or down,these are my only Concerns about the Increasing Population Growth.

I just don't see LA passing NY's. There'd be a chance if they added adequate mass transit, but I doubt that would happen.

I don't think so.

Mass transit plays a role, but so does density. LA's suburbs are relatively low density (lower than NYC's anyway) and sprawling as opposed to NYC's higher density burbs.

Geography plays a role as well. Higher density construction is a bit more difficult in LA given the proximity of major an minor fault lines where as NYC can continue to build high and dense as the bedrock in NYC is so thick and close to the surface. Earthquake's aren't an issue in Metro NYC (at least not to the degree they are in metro LA). Still on the geography topic, mountains and hills around LA will limit expansion (to a degree).

Finally, I think that in order for NYC to be surpassed, LA would need to continue the rapid growth trend that has forced populations to skyrocket over the past few decades. As the city ages, I think this rate will slow (but not necessarily decline). I would be surprised if it didn't level out in the near future.

New York is the economic and cultural capital of the U.S... as long as that remains true, it's unlikely that LA or any city will surpass it in population.

City wise LA Has no Chance passing NY but Metro wise LA Will Pass NY Metro.

If they both continue at their current rate than yes, LA will indeed surpass NY CSA wise. LA's census been growing faster than New Yorks for the past 20-30 years and it doesn't show signs of slowing down. Now LA will NEVER pass NY city wise.

I think there's one important factor here that should be considered, and that's if the New York and Philadelphia MSAs -- being that they are currently separated by hairs -- combine to form one CSA. I'm not saying that would happen in the near future, but that would certainly end any discussion about LA surpassing a mega New York/Philadelphia CSA.
