NY is a great place to visit. Living there is a sure way to shorten your life expectancy though. You have to gargle with rocks in your mouth every morning to prepare yourself for the day. Nothing but lines, more lines, and delays. High level of stress. Commute hell. I don't care to live in a city that tests your capacity to take punishment. Those who can take it more than everyone else do well in NY before falling out at a young age. Forget that. That "Rocky" syndrome is not for me.
High level of stress and commute hell?
I've lived briefly in San Francisco and NYC and my life was most pleasant in NYC. I only worked five blocks from my apartment in Manhattan and EVERYTHING was within my fingertips (cheap food, high end restaurants, bars, galleries, shopping, the park, etc.). NYC is the most convenient and wonderful city in this country.
Unfortunately I couldn't say the same thing about San Francisco.

San Francisco is more convenient than NY. And more wonderful.
The Bay Area is unbeatable as a place to live, work and play. Sorry.
I think both cities are great and have alot to offer. Offcourse New York is larger and is a more international city. But I think a excellent standard of living can be found in San Francisco. Between the two cities I would probably choose San Francisco to live before New York. Although I would not mind living in New York since I have lived in the metro area before.

I think SF is where most NYers would want to live if they had to move away. It's a different climate and far away, but I think of all cities, it's pretty similar to NY in a lot of ways. NY has more to offer, but I really like what SF seems to offer (great weather one of them). If I have enough money by the time we retire, I would love to retire there.

And I guess NYC is where most San Franciscans would want to live if they had to move away since more San Franciscans move to NYC than the other way around.
2000-2005:
San Francisco -----> New York City = 8,167
New York City -----> San Francisco = 6,663
San Francisco-----> Manhattan = 5,833
Manhattan ------> San Francisco = 4,662
Ehh, San Francisco is a good city but not on the same level as NYC.
NY of course...in a dream world I would live between NYC and Paris.
