Well this could be mostly between African Americans sine some of the rivalry was stemmed from drugs and money, which some cities took seriously, but other races could be included as well.

How many cities have some sort of "beef" with one another? and if you don't know any better, which city put in the most work in each battle?

Well, I'm from San Francisco. LA and SF have never been on the same page. A lot of outsiders don't know that SF has some of the roughest projects and hoods on the West Coast. Bayview-Hunter's Point in SF is arguably the roughest hood in the entire Bay, including the hoods in more infamous cities across the bridge like Oakland and Richmond (both Oakland and Richmond are in the top 10 most dangerous cities list as of 2010). Hunter's Point is only 5% of San Francisco's entire population but accounts for 20-50% of all the City's homicides every year. SF, as a whole, is also more deadly for Blacks than Oakland mostly because of Hunter's Point. Young Black men are almost twice as likely to get murdered in SF than Oakland. But the mainstream national media would never tell you that.

San Francisco is more deadly for African Americans

Anyway, back to the SF/LA beef. Everyone knows that the Bloods and Crips originated in LA and spread throughout the state of California in the 70's and 80's. Bloods and Crips managed to set up strongholds in San Diego and even in Northern California cities like Sacramento. It is rumored that LA Bloods and Crips also extended their reach all the way to northern West Coast states like Oregon and Washington. Others argue that Blood and Crip sets formed independently in the Pacific Northwestern states. However, when Bloods and Crips tried to extend their dominance to the ghettos in SF and Oakland in the 80's, they were ran off the block or offed on sight. The LA Bloods and Crips trying to set up shop in the Bay were like American soldiers in Vietnam who were slaughtered by the local natives.

San Francisco Bay Guardian News

To this day, there is no real presence of Bloods and Crips in San Francisco and the entire Bay Area because of this. A lot of non-Californians are unaware of this fact. In other words, the residents of California hoods do not allow questionable Blood/Crip affiliation in the Bay or LA. No hood in California is like random hoods in the South or even on the East Coast where local neighborhood Blood and Crip sets can be formed over night after watching Boyz 'N the Hood and listening to Straight Outta Compton. The only Bloods and Crips in SF are Samoans and Tongans, many of which have family connections to OG sets based in LA (i.e. Sons of Samoa Crips), and they are very few in number.
