It is true that the topography of the land is not all that interesting but I admire what the city is doing to make things livable/fun for the residents, with the revitalization/beautification of the downtown and cultural events. And of course the low cost of housing and abundant good schools are major plusses.
As fun as Portland would be (and thankfully the school is in Hillsboro so we're looking there and Beaverton) it's not going to be much fun if we're struggling financially. I guess we're just going to wait and see what pans out with my husband's job search. It is just so frustrating to not investigate both places first-hand since trips cost so much.
If anyone out there is in the IT field in Portland area (Java) can you let me know how difficult it is to find/keep a job?
Also, I appreciate all your insights about the two places. Keep them coming, thank you!

If you go to Creighton my dad could be your professor, interesting thought.
Anyway Burgerflipper put it well, Omaha for now, move later when you have more money available to you IF you want to move. I one of the Omaha members works in the IT field, Ehenningsen, also you could consult this forum, but keep in mind they (ok we) will probably be pretty biased for Omaha

I've lived in Omaha for a year but only spent several days in Portland. The scenery is better in Portland. From what I can tell the vibe of the city also seems slightly more sophisticated than Omaha. The people are different - both groups nice.

Thank's Go Ne!
That's right, I moved to Portland from Omaha 3 years ago. I think finding a job in Omaha will be a lot easier than Portland. Also, the cost of living is about half. Most homes in Omaha are under 180k, and in Portland... most are over 200k. I personally don't see a difference as far as ammenities go. I personally find Portland prettier... you know with the mountains and lush forests. There's just a totally different feel.. midwest or west coast? I think being liberal you will do fine in Omaha, and in Portland you might get annoyed by your own kind, if that makes sense. One thing that is driving me nuts about Portland is IM ALWAYS OWING TAXES, so much for no sales tax huh? Goodluck... ask me anything.
