Birmingham's neighborhoods are much better taken care of. Yes, I'm talking about the region as a whole.
You've probably never been to Birmingham, and you're simply displaying your anti-southern prejudice.

Buffalo has hockey, football, baseball, THE UB BULLS! and my favorite - LACROSSE! GO BANDITS!
The city has amazing people, great architecture (old buildings!), amazing sports fans...
and a great music scene!
and when it comes to neighborhoods...have you ever been to Amherst (safest town in the USA) or Orchard park?
Shows how much you know...
jeez

I've been to Amherst. Much of it looked like a decaying post ww II suburb. It looked similar to some of the 1960s-1970s developed suburbs of Atlanta, only worse. However, it was one of the best areas in the Buffalo area. My wife and I ate at the Chilis restaurant in Amherst.
By the way, the only reason Buffalo has sports teams and Birmingham does not is because Buffalo developed a long time ago, and was once one of the larger cities in the U.S. Hence, it obtained those franchises long ago. Even though Birmingham is roughly the same size, it doesn't have major league sports franchises because it was much smaller at the time when Buffalo was awarded sports franchises, and because it is too small to obtain MLB, and is too close to Atlanta and Nashville for the others.

Amherst? Which part of Amherst were you in?
I think you were on Niagara Falls BLVD which is Tonawanda... a very safe suburb of Buffalo, NY.

Amherst decaying? Are you sure you been there? There are very few areas of Amherst that are "decaying".

It looked past its prime to me.
A few areas near I-290 looked decent, however.

The town is filled with well kept homes. The "decay" is limited to a handful of homes. No more than you'd find in any other town. I think you are over exaggerating quite a bit.

by leafy do you mean tree-lined? if so you are insane, Buffalo has some of the most green space in the country. even after the October storm we have more tree lined neighborhoods.

last time i checked thats a good thing, urban density is a good thing, and the sprawl destroys the environment.
