Within the south side of Chicago, the bad neighborhoods are, in no order: Back of the Yards, Englewood, Lawndale, Garfield Park even though the United Center is a few blocks away. It's hard to say that the entire south side of Chicago is bad because a large area of the city is considered "the south side". There are nicer, richer neighborhoods in the south side like Hyde Park or Chatham. Also, it's a misconception that Cabrini-Green is the worst project. It's more known due to publicity and it's inclusion in the movie Candyman, but it's my understanding that the Robert Taylor Homes were much worse. There are also horrible smaller suburbs near the south side as well. Harvey comes to mind. That being said, I'm not sure if any of these neighborhoods are so bad that you can't pass through them during the day while working or getting groceries. During the late hours of the night, that might be a different story. From what I've learned from living in the city (for 24 years), watching the news, reading the papers, and knowing people who have come from those areas, they don't sound nearly as bad as East St Louis and Camden have sounded in these forums.

Don't throw all of the South Side of Chicago under one blanket. It's huge -- bigger alone than most cities, and includes nice neighborhoods (such as Beverly) other than Hyde Park.

One problem with your order of bad neighborhoods on the southside of Chicago is that Lawndale and Garfield Park are not on the southside. They are on the Westside.

Every other ghetto in the US is for the most part empty. Which for some, can actually be more intimidating.
Do you know what you are talking about?

There's numerous ghettos that look like Zoo's, especially on New Years Eve.

I completely agree with you. Someone cannot just say that the whole southside of Chicago is bad because it is not. It true though that Chicago's worst neighborhoods are in the southside but everyone must keep in mind that the southside of Chicago is huge and has many neighborhoods that are very nice to live in including Hyde Park and Kenwood. There are also decent neighborhoods like Pullman, Beverly, Hegewisch and many others. The OP should've mentioned bad neighborhoods like "englewood" or "roseland" but not the whole southside of Chicago.

Watts population is around 20,000 and they had more homicides than that, so...

djmario is mostly right.

True dat. But,

"It true though that Chicago's worst neighborhoods are in the southside" is telling the truth, but not the whole truth. djmario should have said that some of Chicago's worst neighborhoods are on the South Side. What about the West Side? Most neighborhoods on the West Side could compete for the title of "Chicago's worst neighborhood".

The South Bronx is a WHOLE geographic area. Compton is one town. If you compared South Central to South Bronx, I think it would be a different story. Is there a link you have about West Farms?
