The reason why the Southern cities do not have extensive rail systems right now is because of politics. Especially Atlanta (which fights the state of Georgia everyday on this issue) and Houston ( which has fought the combination of Culberson and Delay for nearly 20 years). Culberson is in the pockets of the oil people and thus the reason why Houston did not get rail until now. Dallas right now is expanding their system over the other major cities right now because North Texas REALLY wants rail.

Thanks, Spade.

In Atlanta's case, things are so bad with the State that while they contribute zero dollars to MARTA, they have oversight and dictate how they spend their money. MARTA has 65 million in a reserve fund that they really need to access. The State refuses to allow it.

The State of Georgia is basically at war with metro Atlanta.

if atl, hou, dal ever get the public transit going and build some more urban centralized housing they'll probably see more population influx than they can handle and could handily pass many northern cities in population outside of NYC... Seriously though... I know some people think it is a tit for tat thing but that is a major issue why I don't consider those cities as places to move to, and I am definitely not the only one.

Yes, that's why SO MANY of us here are so excited about the Beltline. It will redefine the core in practically every way.

Yikes, I'd definitely get lost driving in LA. It's pretty simple here on Long Island. There are about 4 main highways that take you east and west, along with 3 that take you north and south. Pretty straight forward

Yeah ATL has definitely come a long way from now... and when I used to go up there to go to braves games or fsu vs. gt in the early 90s. I haven't been around the city outside of Hartsfield since nye 2006 though, overdue for a visit.

You will not BELIEVE some of the changes if it has been that long. It's almost scary how fast things happen here.
