Interesting read. Maybe I got it wrong and Chicago is more Southern at least in terms of its black population. However, Philadelphia's white population is undoubtedly more Southern than Chicago's.

Here's another source that details the trends. It's for the Reverse Migration which in some ways mirror the patterns of the Great Migration:
Chicago's white population is also more Southern than Philly's white population. Chicago received lots of migration of white appalachian southerners. Also don't forget about Midwesterners from places like rural Iowa that live in Chicago.
Yeah it seems like the growing Black populations that are occurring in the South today are people going back from where they came from more or less.
And people going where the jobs are. Relatively few Blacks from Georgia went to New York and Philadelphia but lots of Black people from New York and Philadelphia are moving (or have moved) to Atlanta.

Chicago didn't receive nearly enough white Southerners to dilute its culture though. Chicago is still very Midwestern in culture. Philadelphia had a lot of white Southerners move there as well.
The fact that whites in Philadelphia, along with Baltimore and D.C., have some Southern influences in their speech patterns, whereas Chicago's white population doesn't.

Source?
I have heard of Appalachian migration to Midwestern cities and notably Baltimore, but not Philadelphia.
