Seattle is more urban overall, by a long shot. It has a character and culture that would be much more conducive to me personally than San Diego.

I am very familiar with both cities I spent the first 40 years of my life in LA and visited San Diego many times. It is very beautiful as your pictures show, however, I have spent the last 18 years living about halfway between Seattle and the Canadian border. If you are a spiritual person, this is the place for you. You can sit on your front porch and watch eagles flying overhead. The trees are magnificent. I live on a lake surrounded by 100+ ft pine trees. No I am not rich. My 3 bdrm house on 1/2 acre cost 120K in 1992 and is now worth only about 250K. The water and air is clear and clean and the scent of pine is everywhere. Yes, it does rain a lot, but you never have to water your lawn lol. Seasonal depression is common due to short winter days but there are ways to combat that with vitamin B and St Johns Wort or special lamps and in the summer it doesn't get dark until 10 pm. Families here love to hunt and fish so there are always great samples of deer jerkey or smoked salmon from your co workers. I am currently planning to move from this area because I have unfortunately become allergic to all that grows here. This is a huge heartbreak for me, because the best thing about Seattle is the people. When you walk down the street, people look you in the eye and say HI. If your car breaks down some one will stop to help you. Everyone is so polite and kind. People don't cut you off on the freeway, and I have personally witnessed people risking their own lives to save people trapped in their car after an accident. You know your neighbors and are never afraid to count on them if your are in trouble. As I live in a more rural area, I don't have to lock my door or my car. Yet, I am 10 minutes away from the largest Casino and Desinger Mall complex in Washington. Seattle is a city with an old fashioned feel.
That doesn't exsist anywhere in California. If you want to raise a family with good values, come to Seattle.

I would pick San Diego

It has much nicer weather and it is much more conservative than Seattle

And that is why I would pick Seattle. Aside from the politics, the culture of Seattle fits my style more, plus it has both natural and architectural beauty, and more of an urban feel. The downfall of course is a lot of rain, but the lush greenery and the view of mountains on the clear days make up for it, plus you get a few months San Diego-like weather in the summer.
