This is exactly what I hate about the Bay Area. So many people over there have this superiority complex and this pseudo-intellectual elitist attitude. Southern California an intellectual wasteland? Wow. There are some top notch universities here in Cal Tech, UCLA, USC, UCSD and UCI with some bright intellectual leaders that are at the forefront of this nation in their respective fields and to call Southern California an intellectual wasteland because it isn't as progressive and radical as the Bay Area? Talk about intolerance from an arrogant pompous prick.

Well, socal does have a lot larger relatively uneducated immigrant component, so yea. However, it's not an intellectual wasteland as there are plenty of brilliant people there just in smaller proportions.

Far more influential than Chicago. Heck, Id even say a provincial city like Seattle has been more influential than Chicago.
San Francisco is definitely the financial capital of the West, but it's nowhere near as financially important as Chicago and it's the #4 city in the nation when it comes to the finance industry (behind NYC, Chicago and Boston).

It's quite debatable which city is more influential between Chicago and SF...but don't be ridiculous and claim a city like Seattle is more influential than Chi-town. It just makes you look dumb. The financial influence of Chicago is only outdone by New York when speaking of the United States.

As far as actual Banking, SF is 3rd behind NYC and Charlotte.

Bravo!

I totally agree.

The Bay Area is significantly wealthier and a bit more highly educated than the rest of the state and sometimes that goes to our heads.

But as a global financial center, it's fourth.

I'd be interested to see if Charlotte is still #2...Wachovia is gone and BoA has been heavily crippled.

The Bay Area has a HUGE immigrant component as well, one of the biggest in the country, so its a moot point.

The Bay Area overwhelmingly opposed prop 8.
