Battle of "number two" US cities: LA, Chicago, SF, DC, Houston or Boston? (cons, NYC)

I see nothing in your statements that makes a point for Boston being better in medical than Houston. Equal maybe but not better.
And none of the Houston forumers have said anything to show you're more important in the healthcare field. I've heard "we're tops in medicine" and "ever heard of the Texas Medical Center?", but no facts. Meanwhile, we've been showing facts why we're better by showing we're #1 in NIH funding, and we've got two of the Top 10 hospitals in the country. To top that off, if you look at the categories for top hospitals, Boston is in the Top 10 of 15/16 categories, and in the Top 5 for 13/16 categories. Often there are multiple hospitals in the top 10 and sometimes eveen the top 5. Houston was also impressive, just not as impressive as Boston.
I think there is some confusion on comparing the health fields in Houston and Boston. The Texas Medical Center is not a hospital. It is a collection of multi-billion dollar research facilities. I didn't know that about Boston so Boston is no slouch in that category. But the TMC isn't a hospital. You can still get care there though.
How are we even debating over Houston and Boston and which is more important? Boston is far more important. We get most of our oil from Canada anyway.
Which city in the US handles most of the countries oil? Which city in the US is most of the oil businesses located? Whether they are world headquarters or regional headquarters, the presence of energy and oil is there.
That said, I agree mattncind. You can't just disregard education and Boston simply destroys every city except maybe San Francisco in this category. If education wasn't that important, than the city of Houston wouldn't try to get the University of Houston into tier one status.
I agree with DC being #2....but how in god's name can you put Los Angeles behind Chicago, Boston, SF, and Houston? Hell I'm a Boston guy, and I have no shame in admitting we're not as important as LA, and I don't think any of those other cities will claim they're more important they're either.
I feel the only city that could claim the #2 spot instead of LA would be DC just because of the obvious political influence.
Would you care to explain your reasoning?
Mine would go:
DC > LA > Chicago/San Fran > Boston > Houston.
OKay, I will give a two part answer to you. 1)What comes to a persons mind when they hear these cities? Power and Government comes to my mind when I think of D.C., very high education for Boston, NASA and oil for Houston, innovative technology for San Fran/Bay Area, Chicago's just a large busy city, Hollywood for LA.
Here's part 2) Say you have a very young and impressionable young kid who wants to let his/her cities best attribute mold them for the future. I know that this is too simple but lets just do the perfect world act, the D.C. person would grow up being used the political game and could end up being someone important, the Boston kid could become some scholar who's knowledge will influence other generations down the road, the Bay Area kid could invent some new super-computer, the kid from LA could have a future in entertainment, I haven't came up with anything for the Chicago person but I'd still put it before L.A.
My reason are not perfect but I'm coming at a more "What's more beneficial?" angle. My reasons for picking Boston over L.A. is that I feel that the schools of Boston carries more weight than Hollywood (for the Billion dollar question, I'd trust the MIT guy over the Tom Cruise). That's my outlook on this anyway; this has been done before and I wanted new answers for this one.
scratch education,it's important, but it dosen't benefit the rest of the country. Houston has Aerospace, Energy, Healthcare, Ports, Oil, and even Technology. Sorry, but what your saying isn't anything spectacular outside of the 4th highest GDP. I truely feel Houston beats Boston.
Like you stated, Boston takes a backseat to the bay area when it comes to technology. The cities I listed above are first at what they do.
Scratch education? I already listed reasons how our educational institutions have affected this country in many ways. I guess educating several Presidents of the United States and other countries, US Senators, Congressmen and Supreme Court Justices isn't imporant!
Sure I guess we take a backseat to Silicon Valley in tech, but it's better than Houston. Biotech is very important in improving healthcare in this country, and we're one of the best at it, if not the best.
Boston is home to the world leader in mutual funds (Fidelity) and money management (State Street Bank). How is that not important?
If these things aren't spectucalar, then what's so spectacular about Houston's ports and aerospace?

They thought their hospitals were better than NY's

Yes because the US economy would definitely be in danger if something was to happen to those universities.
Education is important, but you can't compare that with things like oil, energy, finance, etc.

What, you think NY's hospitals are vastly better than Houston's? I beg to differ.
And, Houston doesn't matter in energy because we "get most of our oil from Canada?" The over 5,000 energy, pipeline, exploration and production firms in the city don't really matter? Who do you think finds this oil in Canada, Alaska, and offshore? Could it be the hundreds of thousands of downstream engineers/geophysicists/etc that are employed by these companies? I could go on to prove you wrong, but that would be mean..this is way above your level.
You just come into threads and drop piles of steaming crap that have nothing to do with the topic. Now, run along and take some more self portraits.
